The structure is toy like, the sort of arrangement of levels and ramps I used to push toy cars around when I was a kid. The architectural order is disrupted by a visceral body within and camouflaged from without with poured paint. I enjoy the tension between the fact of static object and the illusion of shifting pictorial movement . There is a difficulty in reading the whole, and for me this disjuncture constitutes a truth about reality. In my work there are always tensions between control and turbulence. Structures are set up, then disrupted. The work often develops towards a state of being ‘barely held together’. I want my sculptures to be structures in the world but also psychological, animated by thought. This animacy is gained by plastically transforming material, drawing stuff into the realm of consciousness.
